Lake Como was a waystage on one of the main medieval pilgrimage routes and there are many sacred places that preserve the legacy intact. Churches and basilicas are located along the main roads and often too in hidden places that are not easily accessible.

In Bellagio visit:
the Basilica di San Giacomo, a wonderful example of the Lombard Romanesque; the 16th century church of San Giovanni Battista on the shore and the church of  San Giorgio.

Also worth visiting nearby:
the Church of San Martino in Griante and the sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso in Lenno: both within a scenic walking distance. Not to be missed in Ossuccio is the church of Santa Maria Maddalena with its famous bell tower. A leisurely boat trip takes you to the Abbey of San Nicolò in Piona; the church of San Pietro al Monte and the oratory of San Benedetto in Civate, considered the most important examples of Romanesque art.

In Como, it's worth visiting the Basilica of Sant'Abbondio and the church of San Fedele.
